Your first international travel can be one of the most exciting experiences that you will ever have. However, as a first timer, we are all susceptible to make mistakes. So here are some quick tips for first-time travellers, to help ensure a great trip!
1. Keep your passport close, always
As a first-time international traveller, it can be that you are still unaware about the importance of your passport. Your passport is the most important document you have in an unknown country and hence you must carry it wherever you go. Remember, without your passport, you are nobody in a foreign land. In case of civil war, riots etc. your passport will identify you as a valid citizen and your country’s embassy will be able to help you out. Also in a lot of countries it is mandatory for foreigners to have their passport with them at all times.
2. Get travel insurance
Travel insurance is extremely handy when you face medical emergencies or emergencies of any other kind. In case you lose your luggage, meet with an accident which restricts your travelling, there is a flight cancellation, terrorist attacks etc. your insurance will work as a big help. Further most countries ask for a mandatory medical insurance at the very least. So a small investment will give you a stress-free trip, as you would have all contigencies covered.
3. Currency and cash
If you are travelling to some remote destination in a foreign country, you must always carry local cash, because you may not find an ATM or your international credit card may not work everywhere. Also, you must be up-to-date about the commonly used mode of payment in different countries. For e.g., Europe has shifted to a PIN-and-chip technology, where card with magnetic strips may not work. So check up on the use and availability of cash and card services before you begin your journey.
4. Research on your destination
When you are taking a leisure tour, always read up on the country you are visiting. Flip through the internet to learn more about the country, the languages used, the food and culture among other things so that you do not feel lost in an entirely new country. Another important point is to research on the kind of plug points in use, so you can carry a plug convertor. This would enable you to charge your mobile without hassles.
5. Pack smart
A major mistake that most of us commit when travelling abroad is to pack too much. Remember to pack light so that you can also indulge yourself in some shopping when you visit a new destination. If you luggage exceeds the weight limit of the airlines, you have to pay an insane amount of money for excess baggage. Hence pack smart and pack light!
